There are 15,000 runs-plus for Joe Root if he stays healthy: Mark Taylor

The England batter recently became the 14th entrant into the 10,000-run club with a staggering century in a match-winning cause against New Zealand at Lord's

Former Australia captain Mark Taylor reckons Joe Root still has plenty of runs left in him can break Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most Test runs.

Root recently became the 14th entrant into the 10,000-run club with a staggering century in a match-winning cause against New Zealand at Lord's and is the youngest to the landmark.

“Root has a minimum of five years left in him, so I think Tendulkar’s record is very achievable,” Taylor told Sky Sports.

“Root is batting as well as I have ever seen him bat over the last 18 months to two years. He is in the prime of his career, so there are 15,000 runs-plus for him if he stays healthy.”

Root has reached the landmark in 169 days lesser than Tendulkar. Tendulkar was 31 years and 326 days when he reached 10,000 Test runs, but went on to play even after his 40th birthday.

Former England captain Alastair Cook did not weigh in on the debate of whether Root can break Tendulkar's record, but showed his appreciation of Root's achievements.

"I was so glad I was here to witness that - an unbelievable knock by an unbelievable player," Cook said.

"He is the most complete England batsman in all forms."

England lead the three-match Test series against New Zealand 1-0, at the back of a five-wicket victory in the first Test at Lord's. The action now shifts to the second Test, which will be played at Trent Bridge, starting Friday (June 10), followed by the third and final Test at Leeds on June 23.
