Matthew Kuhnemann, of all the bowlers, was not the biggest threat for the Indian team heading into Australia. However, he took 2/26 and was one of the reasons behind India being restricted to 136/9 in the first ODI at Perth.
Kuhnemann, despite being on the winning side, was not getting ahead of himself and was convinced that the opposition, India, would come back strongly in the second game of the three-match series.
“I think they’ll come back real strong. Like I said, they’re a world-class team, and it’s going to be a great series. With the one-dayers and the T20Is, it’s going to be awesome,” Kuhnemann said at the end of the match press conference, as quoted by the Indian Express.
Kuhnemann accounted for the wickets of Axar Patel (31) and Washington Sundar (10). He was happy with his performance in the absence of lead man Adam Zampa.
“I sort of knew it was going to be a tough task. But I’ve sort of been around this group now for a little while and especially the T20 side of things. I have spent a lot of time the last six months in that sort of role in T20 bowling, so it came in handy today,” said the 29-year-old.
Talking about his learning from Zampa and bowling coach Daniel Vettori, Kuhnemann said, “I’ve spent a lot of time with Zamps for the last three months, especially working with Vettori. And, yeah, T20 career, even though it’s a one-day game, you’ve got to sort of be able to bowl in any over from one to 20, especially as a finger spinner.”
While Australia would look to close the series out with another win at Adelaide, India would aim to remain alive in the series.
