Think Pant is the right guy to lead India in Tests: Yuvraj Singh
Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj heaped praises on the southpaw Rishabh Pant
Earlier this year, Rohit Sharma, who was the white-ball skipper was appointed as the skipper across all formats. But at the age of 34, given that he plays all formats, there is bound to be a time where the selectors look at younger options for taking over the mantle from the Mumbaikar.
Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, who has seen Rishabh Pant at close quarters, stated that the southpaw is the right guy to lead the Men in Blue in the longest format. The all-rounder likened the 24-year-old to former Indian skipper and wicketkeeper, MS Dhoni.
“You must get someone ready. Like Mahi became captain out of nowhere but they made him, right! Then he evolved,” Yuvraj said on Sports18's show ‘Home of Heroes’.
“You pick a young guy who can be a future captain, give him time and don’t expect miracles in the first six months or a year. I feel you must believe in the younger guys to get the job done,” he added.
Despite being just 24, Pant has already been on the shortlist of many Indian legends to be the next Indian skipper. The left-hander is already the skipper of Delhi Capitals, and has led the franchise to the playoffs.
“I was immature at that age, Virat was immature when he was captain at that age. But he (Pant) is maturing with time. I don’t know how the support staff think about it, but I think he is the right guy to lead the Test team,” he added.
“You already have four Test hundreds. In terms of best wicket-keeper batsman, I see Rishabh could be the future legend,” said Yuvraj.
