Three 50+ opening stand on the trot and Faf’s third 50+ in succession sets it for CSK

Here are a few noteworthy stats from Match 23 of IPL 2021 between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad at Arun Jaitley Stadium

Amidst all the chaos, the trailer moved to Delhi and for the first time this season the lights lit up at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Among the four teams stationed in Delhi, Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad locked horns in the first match. Though the venue changed, the fortunes for Hyderabad didn't budged. On back of a quick fire 26 at the end by Kane Williamson after a 106-run partnership between Manish Pandey and David Warner, Hyderabad were able to score 171. Even after a posting a good total on board, Hyderabad were never in the game. Eventually, it was a walk in the park for Chennai batsmen as their openers set up the chase with a 100-run stand. By virtue of a 7-wicket win, Chennai are on a roll with five wins on the bounce.

The fourth batsman to 10k runs in T20s

One of the most consistent batsmen of IPL, David Warner is struggling to score runs this season. However, in tonight’s match against Chennai, Warner registered a few notable milestones. Out of those, the most prominent one was him becoming the fourth batsman in T20s to rack up 10,000 runs. Among the four, in terms of innings, Warner (303) is the second quickest after Chris Gayle (285). In addition, Warner hit his 200th IPL six and registered his 50th half-century in IPL.

Warner’s struggle for momentum

As said, Warner is not at his best this season. He might have scored close to 200 runs with two 50+ scores to his name but the fluency of Warner is still missing. A run-a-ball fifty in the match against Chennai says all about his struggles. His fifty-ball half-century is the second slowest by a Hyderabad batsman in IPL and his slowest in T20s. To emphasize more on his struggles this season, Warner has scored runs at 110.3, the slowest in a season of IPL.

Chennai's opening stand on a roll

At the start of the season, Chennai opening partnership didn’t have a 30+ stand. But, the tables have turned. In the last three, they have been unstoppable, posting three 50+ partnerships which includes two century stands. In IPL, this was the first time that Chennai's opening partnership had raised three 50+ stands in succession. Previously, 11 times they had posted back-to-back 50+ stands. The last one being in 2018, between Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu.

Faf du Plessis joins Ruturaj Gaikwad in an elite list

The seasoned opener of Chennai is back and running in this edition. The only failure he had this season was in the first match when he was packed off for a three-ball duck. After a few 30+ scores in the next two, du Plessis started to convert those in the last three innings. With scores of 95 against Kolkata Knight Riders, 50 against Royal Challengers Bangalore and 56 against Hyderabad tonight, Faf became the second Chennai batsman to register three consecutive 50+ scores in IPL. His present opening partner, Ruturaj Gaikwad is the first player to achieve this.

Second highest opening partnership against Hyderabad

With none of their bowlers breathing fire, Hyderabad bowling attack looks a weak link, just like their fragile middle order. In this season, their bowlers have bagged only two wickets in the first six overs at a balls/wicket ratio of 108 and a runs/wicket ratio of 141.5, the worst among all. This is one of the reasons why in six matches, four teams' opening pairs have posted a 50+. Tonight marked the first century stand this season. In addition, the 129-run stand between Gaikwad and du Plessis is the second highest against Hyderabad for the first wicket in IPL.
