Tilak Varma became the fourth batter in the Indian Premier League (IPL) history to retire, with the MI batter retiring himself out in their clash against Lucknow Super Giants on April 4 (Friday). The left-hander was batting on 25 off 23 balls before the left-hander was retired out, as Mitchell Santner replaced him at the batting crease.
Until then, Tilak couldn’t time anything, scoring just two boundaries during his 23-ball stay, forcing the equation to 24 off seven, as LSG made a stellar comeback in the second innings.

Atharva Taide vs DC, Dharamshala, 2023
Sai Sudharsan vs MI, Ahmedabad, 2023

It was only the fourth occasion when a batter had retired out, after Ravichandran Ashwin (Rajasthan Royals) against LSG in 2022, Atharva Taide (Punjab Kings) vs Delhi Capitals, 2023 and Sai Sudharsan (Gujarat Titans) vs Mumbai Indians in 2023.
Eventually, MI needed 22 off the last over, where even the might of all-rounder Pandya fell flat, as MI lost the clash by 12 runs.
