Time to introduce calculators as IPL 2024 qualification scenario heats up

With just 20 league games remaining, all teams have their strategies set in order to earn the 'Q' next to their name on the points table

The league stage of IPL 2024 is slowly approaching its business end. 50 games are done and only 20 more remain. Each team has around 3-5 games left, and it's officially time to take out the calculators and check what the teams need to do to qualify for the playoffs.

RAJASTHAN ROYALS - Played: 10 Won: 8 Lost: 2 Points: 16 NRR: 0.622

Remaining games: 4

Home: vs PBKS, vs KKR - 2

Away: vs DC, vs CSK - 2

How to qualify?

-    RR have already reached the minimum points required to qualify - 16 points.

-    Winning one more game will be enough to get a ‘Q’ next to their name.

-    If they win all their remaining four games, they will have 24 points, which is more than enough to finish at the top of the points table.

-    If RR lose one of their next three games and KKR win their next four games, RR and KKR will both have 20 points. The two will face each other in their last league stage game at Guwahati, where the winner will finish at the top of the points table.

KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS - Played: 9 Won: 6 Lost: 3 Points: 12 NRR: 1.096

Remaining games: 5

Home: vs MI - 1

Away: vs MI, vs LSG, vs GT, vs RR – 4

How to qualify?

-    KKR need to win at least two games to reach 16 points and be in contention for the playoffs spot.

-    If they win three or more of the remaining five games, they can qualify in the top two positions as they have the best NRR.

LUCKNOW SUPER GIANTS - Played: 10 Won: 6 Lost: 4 Points: 12 NRR: 0.094

Remaining games: 4

Home: vs KKR - 1

Away: vs SRH, vs DC, vs MI – 3

How to qualify?

-    LSG need to win at least two games to reach 16 points and make a case for qualification.

-    To finish in the top two, they need to win all of their remaining four games and would want RR and KKR to lose at least three of the remaining four and five games respectively.

SUNRISERS HYDERABAD - Played: 10 Won: 6 Lost: 4 Points: 12 NRR: 0.072

Remaining games: 4

Home: vs LSG, vs GT, vs PBKS - 3

Away: vs MI – 1

How to qualify?

-    SRH winning all of their remaining four games will take them to 20 points, which is more than enough for qualification.

-    They can also aim for a top-two finish if KKR lose at least a couple of their remaining five games.

-    In order to finish third on the points table, they must win at least three of the remaining four and expect LSG to lose at least 2 of their remaining four games.

-    Since they have won three of the four home games against teams like RR, CSK and MI, they will be expected to win the remaining three as well.

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS - Played: 10 Won: 5 Lost: 5 Points: 10 NRR: 0.627

Remaining games: 4

Home: vs RR - 1

Away: vs PBKS vs GT, vs RCB – 3

How to qualify?

-    CSK need to win at least three of the four games to stay in contention for qualifying with 16 points.

-    If they win their remaining four games, they will finish with 18 points and will qualify for the playoffs due to superior NRR.

-    They would want SRH and LSG to lose at least two of their remaining 4 games respectively in order to push them down and reduce their chances of qualifying.

-    With three of the four being away matches, CSK will have a tough task to pull off as they have managed to win just one of the four away games they have played so far.

DELHI CAPITALS - Played: 11 Won: 5 Lost: 6 Points: 10 NRR: -0.442

Remaining games: 3

Home: vs RR, vs LSG - 2

Away: vs RCB - 1

How to qualify?

-    DC have to win all their remaining three games in order to reach 16 points.

-    Since they have the second-lowest NRR in the tournament, they need to win all three games with a big margin.

-    They would want SRH and CSK to lose at least three of their four remaining games in order to increase their chances of qualifying at the fourth spot.

PUNJAB KINGS - Played: 10 Won: 4 Lost: 6 Points: 8 NRR: -0.062

Remaining games: 4

Home: vs CSK, vs RCB - 2

Away: vs RR, vs SRH - 2

How to qualify?

-    PBKS need to win all their remaining four games in order to reach 16 points.

-    By beating CSK and SRH, they will increase their chances of qualification.

They must expect CSK and SRH to lose against other opponents, which will allow them to qualify at the fourth spot.

-    With an NRR of -0.062, PBKS must win big.

GUJARAT TITANS - Played: 10 Won: 4 Lost: 6 Points: 8 NRR: -1.113

Remaining games: 4

Home: vs CSK, vs KKR - 2

Away: vs RCB, vs SRH - 2

How to qualify?

-    Will reach to 16 points if they win all their remaining four matches.

-    Since they have the lowest NRR, they have to beat their opponents in a dominant fashion.

-    Should expect RR, MI and RCB to beat LSG, SRH, CSK, DC and PBKS in their respective matches in order to increase their chances of qualification.

MUMBAI INDIANS - Played: 10 Won: 3 Lost: 7 Points: 6 NRR: -0.272

Remaining games: 4

Home: vs KKR, vs SRH, vs LSG - 3

Away: vs KKR - 1

How to qualify?

-    Can reach up to 14 points if they win all of their remaining four games.

-    Have to expect DC, SRH, GT and PBKS to lose majority of their games.

-    Expect RR to win all their four games as it will impact DC, CSK and PBKS' chances.

-    Even if they lose one game, they are out of the tournament.

ROYAL CHALLENGERS BENGALURU - Played: 10 Won: 3 Lost: 7 Points: 6 NRR: -0.415

Remaining games: 4

Home: vs GT, vs DC, vs CSK - 3

Away: vs PBKS - 1

How to qualify?

-    RCB can reach 14 points if they win all four games.

-    Need RR and KKR to win against CSK, DC, PBKS and GT in their respective games.

-    Three of the four remaining matches are at home in Bengaluru. They have won only one of the four games at this venue so far in IPL 2024.

-    Even if they lose one game, they are out of the tournament.
