Training in IPL so regularly helped me during Sri Lanka tour: Glenn Maxwell

With growing injuries in the Australia camp, Maxwell was roped into the squad for the Test series against Sri Lanka

Called up to the Australia squad following a string of injuries to the regular players, Glenn Maxwell believes training regularly in the Indian Premier League (IPL), and playing on spinning wickets has helped him coming into the tour of Sri Lanka.

Batting at No. 7, Maxwell scored 160 runs at 40 in his five ODI innings against Sri Lanka. He will now look to add to his seven Test caps, the last of which came against Bangladesh in Chattogram in 2017.

"I think training in IPL so regularly... being in a bubble during IPL really helped because there was no travel, so we had more time for training sessions," Maxwell, who scored over 300 runs and picked up six wickets in IPL 2022 said.

"Training wickets were extremely tired, they were spinning big, they were inconsistent and it was brilliant practice. That helped me coming into this series."

Maxwell also says that he will now need a new Test cap as the old one is in terrible shape. "I'm glad I didn't bring it because it has completely disintegrated, so I'm going to have to get a new one for this Test tour," the 33-year-old said.

"I took it out last year and had a look at it, it was deteriorating and I thought that wasn't a good sign. My wife took it out yesterday and said, 'I don't think I can bring this," he added.

In his short Test career so far, Maxwell has scored 339 runs at 26.07 and has picked up eight wickets since making his debut against India in 2013.
