One of the most extraordinary knockout T20 matches in recent times ended in arguably the incredulous fashion imaginable as Trent Boult smashed 22* off 13 balls to help MI New York win the Eliminator of MLC 2025 against San Francisco Unicorns, a game they looked destined to lose.
Chasing 132, MINY endured a near-fatal collapse in the middle, falling from 81/2 to 108/8 in four overs. The USA left-arm spinner Hassan Khan did all the damage with the ball for SFU, and it looked like the game was done and dusted.
However, it was at this point that Boult played the knock of his career batting at No.9, scoring 22* off 13, his second-highest score in T20s.
MINY needed 19 off the last 2 overs with Hassan Khan (who had figures of 4/15 at that point) bowling the penultimate over, and Boult plundered SFU’s best bowler for consecutive sixes. A 15-run penultimate over left MINY with just four to get off the final over bowled by Ben Lister, and Boult got help from Nosthush Kenjige as MINY pulled off a remarkable heist.
Earlier, Boult also took 2/19 with the ball in hand, dismissing two big fishes in Tim Seifert and Jake Fraser-McGurk.
MINY will now take on Texas Super Kings (TSK) in a blockbuster ‘Challenger’ clash on July 11, for a date with Washington Freedom in the final on July 13.
