The Emirates Cricket Board on Monday announced that its flagship six-team franchise league will be called International League T20 (ILT20). The tournament will have 34 matches played from January 6 to February 12, 2023 across three venues in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah.
Five of the teams are owned by Indian companies including Mumbai Indians' owner Reliance Industries, Shah Rukh Khan's Knight Riders Group, Kiran Kumar Granthi of Delhi Capitals, Gautam Adani of Adani Sportsline and Capri Global apart from Lancer Capitals, a company belonging to Manchester United owners Glazer family.
Emirates Cricket Board chairman Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan said: "Emirates Cricket Board is delighted to welcome Reliance Industries, Kolkata Knight Riders, Capri Global, GMR, Lancer Capital, Adani Sportsline, broadcaster ZEE and all other stake-holders to the newly established T20 League of UAE.
"Such illustrious, experienced names and entities as partners bodes well for the UAE T20 League. Through the commitment of these partners they have demonstrated confidence in the Emirates Cricket Board as we take the game into the future," the ECB chairman added.
The scheduled for the tournament is likely to clash with Cricket South Africa's flagship franchise league and the Big Bash League. Pakistan Super League is set to kick off two days after the completion of ILT20.
All teams will be allowed a player fee of USD 2 million, with the companies owning IPL franchises likely to have the leeway to sign four players from their current rosters.
