The Pakistan women’s team have announced their 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Women’s ODI World Cup in India. Eyman Fatima, who’s known for her hitting ability but has played only three T20Is for Pakistan, is also included in the squad that is largely on the expected lines.
Except Eyman, Pakistan have gone with a largely tried and tested squad. Gul Feroza and Najiha Alvi are dropped from the 15, but are included in the five non-travelling reserves constituted by Tuba Hassan, Umm-e-Hani and Waheeda Akhtar.
Opening batter and wicketkeeper Muneeba Ali Siddiqui will be opening the innings, and she is the vice-captain of the side, with star all-rounder Fatima Sana leading the side in her second World Cup campaign after the 2024 T20 World Cup in the UAE.
Pakistan have selected a spin-heavy bowling attack, which will be led by left-arm spinner Sadia Iqbal. Skipper Sana will be the key pacer for the side and will be expected to bear the majority of the pace bowling load in the competition, along with Diana Baig.
Notably, the Women in Green will be playing all their games in Colombo, and not India, as both the neighbours have decided not to travel to each other’s venues and rather play at a neutral ground. Sana and her team will face India on October 5, and will begin their campaign on October 2 against Bangladesh.
Prior to that, they’ll be having a 14-day camp in Pakistan starting August 29 under coach Mohammad Wasim and then will face South Africa in a preparatory three-ODI series starting September 16. The ODI World Cup begins on September 30 and will go on till November 2.
