The 56th match of the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was full of ups and downs, and ultimately, it were the visitors Gujarat Titans (GT) who won the game.
Batting first, MI could only score 155/8 in 20 overs despite being 89/2 at the end of 10 overs. They had a task at their hands with GT’s batting lineup being well suited for a 150-160 kind of chase. However, rain interruptions and changes in weather conditions made it a tricky target to hunt down.
That’s when Jasprit Bumrah rose for MI and made things closer than it was supposed to be, as he dismissed Shubman Gill with a back-of-the-length delivery that pitched outside off and nipped back in sharply to uproot Gill’s stumps. At that point, GT were 113/2 in 14.4 overs and really well placed to chase down 156. Bumrah returned in the 17th over to clean up Shahrukh Khan as well, and give GT a proper bolt.
Ultimately, some execution errors and a lot of huffing puffing helped them chase the total. Speaking on Bumrah’s genius, former India cricketer Aakash Chopra hailed his brilliance and said that its really unfortunate that Bumrah isn’t the most expensive player in the league, because he certainly has a huge impact on most games he plays.
“Bumrah has made it a habit to produce game-changing spells,” Chopra said on Jio Hotstar.
“Coming in right after the strategic timeout and rain break, he dismissed Shubman Gill and then Shahrukh Khan, swinging the momentum back to MI. He’s a once-in-a-generation talent — you could talk about him endlessly. Frankly, he deserves to be the most expensive player in the league. It’s unfortunate that he isn’t.”
MI lost the game ultimately by three wickets. With this loss, MI’s streak of six wins on the trot in the season was broken. They have 14 points in 12 games and are still going strong to finish in the top four.
