After breaking into India’s T20I team on the back of impressive showings in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Varun Chakaravarthy, across the last month, cracked ODI cricket and became a trump card for the side in 50-over cricket.
Chakaravarthy was India’s X-factor in the recently-concluded Champions Trophy, which the Men in Blue won, taking nine wickets in the three games he played, bamboozling players with his mystery spin.
So having graduated from T20Is to ODIs, many have been wondering if the 33-year-old will now make the next jump and strive to play Test cricket for India.
However, according to Chakaravarthy, playing Test cricket is off the table due to his bowling style.
"I'm interested in Test cricket, but my bowling style is not suitable for Tests,” Chakaravarthy said in a chat with Tamil anchor Gobinath on the latter’s YouTube channel.
“With my action and bowling style, it's realistically not possible for me to bowl those long spells. Because I bowl really quick, I can only bowl 10-15 overs at best. So my bowling is not suitable for red-ball cricket. Which is why I'm only focusing on 20-over and 50-over cricket,” he explained.
The mystery spinner, in fact, has played only one red-ball game in his entire career, which came for Tamil Nadu against Hyderabad back in 2018. And he did not enjoy the best of matches, taking just one wicket while conceding 105 runs in the 39 overs he bowled in the contest.
