Varun Chakravarthy seems to be on a record-breaking spree and he broke many of them on January 28 (Tuesday) during the third T20I of the five-match series against England in Rajkot.
However, the most important record that the 33-year-old broke was becoming the Indian bowler with joint-most five-wicket hauls in the T20Is.
With his second five-for in the shortest format of the game at the international level, Chakravarthy joined Kuldeep Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar as Indians with the most five-wicket hauls in T20Is. Both the Uttar Pradesh bowlers have had two five-fors in T20Is as well.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar
5/24 vs SA, Johannesburg, 2018
5/4 vs AFG, Dubai, 2022
Kuldeep Yadav
5/24 vs ENG, Manchester, 2018
5/17 vs SA, Johannesburg, 2023
Varun Chakravarthy
5/17 vs SA, Gqeberha, 2024
5/24 vs ENG, Rajkot, 2025
Chakravarthy, who had taken five wickets in the first two matches (3 in Kolkata and 2 in Chennai) and got five in this one as well, now has 10 wickets in two T20I bilateral series. The Tamil Nadu bowler is now the first player in history to have picked 10 or more wickets in two bilateral T20I series.
He had earlier picked up 12 wickets in the four-match series against South Africa in November 2024.
Chakravarthy, who had not picked even a single wicket in his first over today, got going in the second over when Samson did a brilliant job behind the stumps to remove Jos Buttler. From there on, it became hard to pick the mystery spinner who kept the ball in the good length and short of the good length area.
After Buttler, Chakravarthy got the wickets of Jamie Smith, James Overton, Brydon Carse and Jofra Archer in quick succession to push England out of the game. He was the main reason why the English could get up to only 171/9, despite being 83/1 at one point in time.
