Varun Chakravarthy, Sunil Narine will be effective in Sharjah: Brian Lara

The former West Indies captain doesn't see any way RR can overcome KKR in this match

In what is a crucial game for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), they take on Rajasthan Royals (RR) in a bid to make it to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 playoffs. RR were in the race when they beat Chennai Super Kings (CSK) convincingly but then crashed to a defeat against Mumbai Indians (MI).

Former West Indies captain Brian Lara believes that KKR’s mystery spinners Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine will be key for them on the slow deck in Sharjah.

“Even though the fast bowlers have been doing the damage in Sharjah with the slower pitch, I feel Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine are going to be very effective,” Lara said on Cricket.com’s Man vs Machine.

The fact that RR have not come to the party this season also further helps KKR, he adds.

“Of all the teams are struggling in Sharjah, RR looks the worst. Their batting just fell apart and what was more troubling was their bowlers did not even trouble Mumbai Indians’ batting. Sometimes your batting struggles but your bowlers know what to do. That’s what happened with Mumbai Indians. The fact that RR have not come to terms with that pitch in its entirety – in bowling and batting – it’s very difficult to see them turning over a result over KKR,” Lara opines.

Could KKR cause more harm if they make it to the playoffs? Lara feels they can, but further adds that they need to be full-strength for that to happen.

“KKR’s biggest problem is that they have lost Lockie Ferguson and Andre Russell. I heard somewhere that Ferguson may be back, he is a big addition to the team. Yes, they are an outfit that can cause some problems in the playoff. But they need to be full-strength,” Lara said.

“Eoin Morgan has got to be very careful of his selection because he isn’t doing what’s necessary. If you’re picking a guy for his captaincy, it’s a big risk because in T20s, literally anyone can captain a team. You see a lot of information coming from off the field. I’d like to see him get some runs as well to solidify his place. But, KKR need to be at full-strength to tussle with the likes of DC, CSK and RCB,” Lara who last played for West Indies in the 2007 World Cup, added.

RR, who finished bottom in IPL 2020, find themselves in seventh position with 10 points from 13 matches. KKR, on the other, hand narrowly missed out on a place in the top four last season have it their hands to make amends and make it to the next round.
