Venue guide feat Bengaluru, a batters paradise, to Delhi, a bowlers heaven

Here are a few brief characteristics of all ten venues to be used in the 2023 World Cup in India

The 2023 World Cup in India starts on the 5th of October. In total, ten venues have been allocated, with each of those hosting five games, barring Hyderabad.

The edition opener between England and New Zealand will be played at the world's biggest cricket arena, Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. India's nine league games will be played across nine different venues. Hyderabad is the only stadium without an India match.

Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad

In the last five ODIs at Narendra Modi Stadium, batting hasn't been as friendly as it has been in the shortest format (All T20s). Batting teams have an average of 28.4, the second-lowest of all the ten venues. In the last three ODIs, no one has breached the 270-run mark.

Here are a few other characteristics of this venue.

M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru

As soon as we hear the name of this stadium, the first thing that comes to mind is it's a paradise for batters and a graveyard for bowlers in limited overs. In this venue's last six ODI innings, 300+ have been scored in four and 285+ in the other two.

Here are a few other characteristics of this venue.

MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai

Spin to win at Chepauk is a slight misconception. Spinners in the last five ODIs have bagged a wicket every 51.6 balls and 44.1 runs, the fourth-worst among the ten venues.

Here are a few other characteristics of this venue.

Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association, Dharamsala

The most scenic venue in India has hosted only four ODIs. The game against South Africa in 2020 was abandoned without a ball being bowled. In the other four, teams batting first have been bundled out for less than 200 twice, 226 once, and one score of 300+.

Here are a few other characteristics of this venue.

Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi

If Lucknow is slower, Delhi is the slowest. In the last ten innings at this venue, only thrice has a team scored at a run rate of above five runs/over. The batting teams have scored at a run rate of only 4.6, and their average is less than 25. In six out of ten innings, teams have been all-out.

Here are a few other characteristics of this venue.

Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, Hyderabad

In this World Cup, Hyderabad is allotted three games, of which two will be on consecutive days. Despite being known as one the biggest grounds (by field of play dimensions), the bowlers have struggled. Batting teams have scored at a run-rate of 5.9 in the last five ODIs, the joint-second highest.

Here are a few other characteristics of this venue.

Eden Gardens, Kolkata

One of the most iconic venues in India, Eden Gardens, has the most lightning-fast outfield, which is why, more than the aerial hits, the ground shots fetch more value. If Chinnaswamy is known for sixes, Eden Gardens is known for fours.

Here are a few other characteristics of this venue.

Ekana Stadium, Lucknow

One who has closely followed games played in Lucknow will know it is a very slow pitch. Like Dharamasala, Lucknow has also witnessed only four ODIs. Afghanistan and West Indies have featured in three of those four, and India and South Africa played the last game at this venue in 2022.

Here are a few other characteristics of this venue.

Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

In the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League, runs flowed like water at Wankhede. However, ODI and T20s are different formats. In the last five ODIs, teams chasing have won four out of the five. But, three of those four times, teams chased less than 260.

Here are a few other characteristics of this venue.

Maharashtra Cricket Association, Pune

The venue is similar to Wankhede and Chinnaswamy, as runs flow easily. The surface has been the most suitable one for the pacers. Though the ground dimensions are bigger than Chinnaswamy's, the bounce is so true that the batters can swing through the line.

Here are a few other characteristics of this venue.

Please note: All the data are from the last five ODIs played at the venue unless stated otherwise. The comparison is only between the ten allocated venues for the World Cup.
