Wade backs Finch and Warner to open in 2022 T20 World Cup

Australian keeper-batter Matthew Wade was confident that captain Aaron Finch will find form

Australia's Matthew Wade was confident that David Warner and Aaron Finch will be the opening pair during the 2022 T20 World Cup at home despite a lean patch of form.

Finch has been unable to find his scoring touch in the 4-1 T20 series victory against Sri Lanka as he managed just 78 runs from five matches. Wade dismissed questions over the effectiveness of the skipper alongside Warner as they aim to defend their title later this year.

"Finchy is a class player and I've heard people questioning where he's at. He averages 40 and strikes at 140 for a reason. He's the captain of our team and the questions are always going to come when you get a little bit older and you don't do well in one series," Wade said after the fifth T20 in Melboune.

Wade, who played a whirlwind 41 off 17 balls in the semifinal against Pakistan, pointed to the questions that were hanging on Australia's batting before the 2021 World Cup.

"It feels like these questions have come before potentially before the last World Cup and after the first couple of games about David. Everyone had their say about Davey and he got player of the tournament in the World Cup," he said of Warner, who scored 289 runs from seven innings in the showpiece event.

"They're class players for a reason and the best we've had in T20 cricket ever, and I don't expect any change at the top of the order to be honest. So those two will be there in the World Cup. I'm confident in that and when the big game comes they will nail it," he added.

Wade, who has built a reputation as a finisher in the T20s, said that he is not worried about his place in the team.

"The position that I'm going to play dictates that I'll just go there and take the opportunity that I can. I feel really confident in what we're doing down there. I feel backed by the coaching staff and the selectors that there's going to be a real opportunity down there for myself," he said.
