Despite being one of the most consistent performers for Punjab Kings in the 2020 edition, Nicholas Pooran’s 2021 season was in complete disarray. In 12 appearances for the Kings, the southpaw only managed to score 85 runs, out of which 32 came in an innings, averaging just 7.72.
While he was widely trolled and criticised by the fans, the 26-year-old wants to put that behind him and be the best version of himself in the upcoming season. Having been backed heavily by the Sunrisers, Pooran insisted that he would give it all to his new franchise this season.
"It doesn't feel like that. Just because I had one bad season, it's not going to change the player I am. I am doing pretty well in international cricket and everyone sees that. For me it's about giving back to my team - the Sunrisers have invested a lot in me and so I just want to give my all for them - to me it's about being the best version of myself,” Pooran told ESPNCricinfo.
In the 2021 season, the talented West Indian batter had registered five ducks, before which he was dropped from the playing XI. However, in the latter part of the season, the southpaw returned to represent the franchise. Prior to the IPL, turning up for the Windies, Pooran scored 61, 62 and 61, which would definitely put him in a good headspace.
"Things like this happen; everyone goes through patches in their career. First game last year, I got a first-ball duck, then next game, I got a second-ball duck. Eventually I went out to bat and didn't even face a ball, got run out (laughs). I'm not dwelling on it too much, I believe I am a much better player now, and I learnt a lot from that IPL season," he said.
"As a professional player, sometimes I guess it does, especially when you're not doing well, the media targets you, a lot of fans criticise you, so it [the fee] definitely does play a part. But as a professional it's your job to put that noise behind you and just try to perform for the team.”
Sunrisers Hyderabad open their campaign with a clash against Rajasthan Royals, on March 29 (Tuesday) before facing the new side, Lucknow Super Giants in April.
