Warner targets SCG farewell to cap Test career

David Warner also said that the 2024 T20 World Cup would be his last game in international cricket

The 36-year-old David Warner has outlined that the Test series against Pakistan next year would be his last red-ball series in an Australian jersey. Warner has revealed his desire to hang up his Test boots at home in Sydney during the Test series against Pakistan.

Ahead of that, though, the left-hander insisted that he would be part of the red-ball setup for both the World Test Championship final against India and the Ashes series that follows the showdown event in England.

However, his place in the Australian setup isn’t a sure-shot one, given his patchy run in the longest format and his evident weakness in English conditions, where he averages 26.04, and has been dismissed cheaply multiple times during the 2019 Ashes.

"If I can get through this (WTC final and ensuing Ashes campaign) and make the Pakistan series I will definitely finish up then,” Warner told Cricket.com.au

Warner also revealed that he will not take part in the two-match Test series against West Indies that is sandwiched between the Ashes and the home series against Pakistan.

"I probably owe it to myself and my family - if I can score runs here and continue to play back in Australia - I can definitely say I won't be playing that West Indies series,” he added.

The big bombshell, however, was that the southpaw would call it quits from international cricket later in 2024, after the T20 World Cup in West Indies. In the limited formats of the game, the left-hander has scored 8924 runs and was an instrumental figure in Australia's win in the 2021 T20 World Cup in the Middle East.

"You've got to score runs. I've always said the (2024) World Cup would probably be my final game," Warner said.
