Warner was not the only experienced player we left back at hotel: Bayliss

The left-hander was replaced by Jason Roy in Hyderabad's last night game against Rajasthan

You talk about Sunrisers Hyderabad, you have to talk about David Warner. The left-handed opener from Australia, who led them to their only IPL title in 2016, has been Hyderabad’s most consistent performer over the last five years but has struggled big time in the ongoing edition. Warner has managed only 195 runs in eight innings at an average of 24.38 and a strike rate of 107.7 and has been dropped from the team twice.

Having slammed 4014 runs in 95 innings at a super average of 49.56 for the franchise, Warner started the 2021 season as captain but was relieved of his duties in the first half. He was then left out of the playing XI but made a comeback when the second half started earlier this month. The 34-year-old managed only two runs in two innings and was replaced by England’s Jason Roy in Hyderabad's last night game against Rajasthan Royals.

But, that’s not it. Warner didn’t even travel to the ground and was left at the hotel on Monday (September 27). Warner was seen cheering the team on Instagram but also hinted that he might be done for the season.

"We can't make the final so have made a decision that we want the young players to experience not just the matches but time at the ground, around the set-up, and for this match we made the decision. He was not the only experienced player we left back at the hotel (Kedar Jadhav and Shahbaz Nadeem were the others)," said SRH head coach Trevor Bayliss after Hyderabad defeated Rajasthan by seven wickets.

"We have a number of young players that haven't been to the ground. Even as reserves. We wanted to give them an opportunity to come along and experience that. That may continue for a few more games yet. We don't know.

"We have got to sit down in a day or two and pick a team and pick a squad of 18. That's just the way it is. Dave is obviously watching the game back in the hotel and giving the guys support. It is the same as everyone else. We are all in this together."

So, is this Warner’s last year at the franchise? "Look that certainly has not been discussed. It is something that… this is the last year before a major auction. Those decisions will be made further down the line. He has been a great contributor to Hyderabad Sunrisers for a number of years now. He is very well respected with the amount of runs he has scored. I am sure he has got a lot more runs in him yet in the IPL," said Bayliss.

Making his debut for the franchise, Roy surely didn’t disappoint as the right-hander dasher smoked 60 off 42 deliveries to help Hyderabad win their second game of the season. Chasing 165, Roy and Kane Williamson scored half-centuries and took their team past RR’s total in the penultimate over.
