Shreyas Iyer manages to get into the headlines even with his meagre comments. Iyer along with Ishan Kishan were made villains in the media after their names were removed from the central contract list of 2023-24. It was thought to be because of disciplinary action. But now Iyer has come up with the real reason behind losing the central contract back then.
“No one can understand the pain I went through. I was totally paralysed in one leg. With spine surgery, you can place a rod in the back and still manage. But a snapped nerve, which is what I had, is really, really dangerous,” TOI quoted Iyer as saying to GQ India, about the injury that occurred in 2024.
“People see athletes as robots who must perform every game. They don’t know what’s happening behind the scenes," he added.
There was a huge debate about Iyer’s work ethics during that time. Now, the debate is around his place in the Indian T20 set up for Asia Cup 2025. He has not been able to get into the side despite leading two different teams to back-to-back IPL finals.
“I can only control the controllable. I’ll keep working on my skills and strength, and when the opportunity arises, I’ll grab it with both hands,” Iyer said, when he was asked to react to his omission.
Iyer will lead India A in a two-match unofficial multi-day series against Australia A. The first match will begin from September 16 in Lucknow.
