World Cup wins for Bangladesh Women have been rare. In fact, they have won just two of their 13 matches in the tournament since they made their debut in 2022. They started off this edition of the Women's World Cup with a comprehensive victory over Pakistan, but things have gone downhill for them ever since.
They had a terrific chance of winning their game against Sri Lanka in Navi Mumbai on October 20 (Monday), but despite needing just 12 off the last two overs with six wickets in hand, they fell short by seven runs. They needed nine to win off the last over, and that's when Sri Lanka skipper Chamari Athapaththu showed her class with the ball.
She first trapped Rabeya Khan leg-before and right after that, a direct hit from Nilakshi de Silva saw Nahida Akter run out off her first ball. The set batter Nigar Sultana then sliced one straight to long-off as Sri Lanka completed a team hat-trick.
The carnage continued as Athapaththu got Marufa Akter LBW off the first ball, to make it four wickets in four balls. A single followed off the penultimate ball, with Bangladesh needing eight off the final ball. Athapaththu then beat the bat of Sharmin Akhter to help her side clinch a seven-run victory.
Bangladesh, as a result, crashed out of the tournament, while Sri Lanka kept their semi-final hopes alive. Sri Lanka have to beat Pakistan on October 24 (Friday) next and hope for other results to go their way.
