As soon as JP Duminy hit the winning six against the Pakistan Champions for South Africa Champions on August 2 (Saturday) in the final of the World Championship of Legends (WCL) at Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham, an emotional AB de Villiers could be seen hugging him for a long period of time.
It was a rare occasion for the former Proteas batter as he completed a special treble, if one could call it that. Not only was it the first-ever world-level trophy, albeit for retired players, that de Villiers won, but he did that in style too, with a century in the final of the event.
Apart from the first-ever world-level trophy, it was also the third trophy of relevance for de Villiers. The 41-year-old’s former team, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), ended an 18-year wait by winning the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. That happened on June 3.
10 days later, on June 13, South Africa ended their 27-year wait to win their second ICC Trophy and first-ever World Test Championship (WTC) title by defeating Australia at Lord’s.
And 20 days on, the South African won his third trophy. He was present for all three finals at the venue and celebrated with the winning team, with the third one as a player.
