There is nothing more embarrassing for a bowler on a cricket field than celebrating prematurely, only for that celebration to be ruined by a no-ball or a field mishap.
On day three of The Oval Test, India’s Prasidh Krishna endured one such ‘aura debt’ moment as he was left red-faced after seeing his premature celebration count for nothing.
On the first ball of the 35th over, Prasidh bowled a sharp bouncer outside off, which Harry Brook top-edged. The ball ballooned up in the air, and Mohammed Siraj at fine-leg circled under it to take what looked like a simple catch.
Even before Siraj could complete the catch, the bowler Prasidh started celebrating, in the process letting out a cheeky grin, staring at the batter Brook.
Siraj held on to the catch, except disaster unfolded seconds after that as he stepped on the boundary cushions. Siraj overbalanced and took an extra step, and that proved fatal. Siraj was in disbelief after turning a dismissal into a six, and the fast bowler’s drop also left Prasidh red-faced, big time.
Brook went on to score two more boundaries in the over after that, leaving Siraj red-faced.
So, a valuable lesson for Prasidh, perhaps? Never celebrate too early.
