The bat flies to square leg.
Batter looks straight down at the ground.
The ball gets caught in the long-off region.
Have you ever seen anything remotely close to this in Test cricket’s history?
If not, welcome to Rishabh Pant’s world, as the left-hander batter got out in the most bizarre of fashions in the ongoing second Test against England, on July 5 (Saturday). The swashbuckling batter had almost taken an English win out of the equation when he tried to attempt the most ludicrous shot in Test history.
Pant, in a bid to smash Shoaib Bashir, flung his blade powerfully towards the square leg region. But he didn’t get the desired connection on the ball, as it flew off the outside half of his bat towards the long-off region, where Ben Duckett was placed.
Duckett didn’t have to move a lot, as he safely grabbed the ball and put an end to Pant’s 58-ball stay, where he smashed 65 runs, including three massive sixes. It wasn’t even the first time that Pant lost track of his bat, after flinging one earlier in the innings.
Brydon Carse saw the funny side of things as he returned Pant’s bat, and England breathed a sigh of relief after his dismissal. Don't be shocked if you see this in the list of 'Most Shocking Dismissals in Test cricket' as a thumbnail in the future on YouTube.
