23-year-old Mitchell Owen continued to grow from strength to strength, with the right-handed opener smashing a 69-ball 149 for Tasmania against South Australia on February 23. Owen picked up from where he left in List A cricket with a 48-ball century, the third-fastest in List A cricket for an Australian cricketer.
It wasn’t the first time when the right-hander teed off with a 39-ball BBL record-equalling century against Sydney Thunder in the BBL 14 final. In his last List A encounter, the opener smashed a 19-ball 48, where he hit eight boundaries with four sixes.
29 balls - Jake Fraser-McGurk, South Australia vs Tasmania 2023
40 - Glenn Maxwell, Australia vs Netherlands 2023
48 - MITCHELL OWEN, Tasmania vs South Australia 2025*
Unfortunately, for Owen, he couldn’t break Jake Fraser-McGurk’s Australian record of scoring the fastest List A century (29 balls). But he wasn’t far behind Glenn Maxwell’s 40-ball century against the Netherlands in the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Given his recent form and how IPL teams will be keeping a close eye on him, there’s a good chance that we can see Mitchell Owen being fast-tracked into an IPL franchise this edition.
