Controversy was around the corner in the Shpageeza Cricket League 2025, when Mohammad Ishaq was deemed run-out in the most bizarre manner on July 24 (Thursday).
The controversy happened in Match 9 of the current edition of the Afghanistan T20 league, where Speen Ghar Tigers took on Amo Sharks. When Speen Ghar Tigers put 121 runs in the first innings, it looked like an easy run chase for the Sharks.
But at 30/3, it was turning out to be quite a tricky run chase for the Sharks, when Shahidullah Kamal came out to bat. However, Kamal and Mohammad Ishaq put on a 31-run stand, pressing the foot on the accelerator when the bizarre event took place.
Kamal hit the ball back at the bowler when Ishaq charged to the striker’s end for a quick single. But the bowler narrowly missed the target as Ishaq returned to the non-striker’s end with relative ease, putting his gloves inside the line as the bat flew from his hand.
Just when he thought he was safe and went to pick up his bat, Darwish Rasooli threw down the ball at the non-striker’s end as Ishaq was out of the crease, looking elsewhere, assuming the ball to be dead.
Much to the Sharks' shock, Ishaq was ruled OUT by the third umpire. The third umpire's decision has come under the scanner, given the ball looked like it was dead, but the incident also has triggered a spirit of the cricket debate, with Rasooli's actions criticised by many.
