On September 1 (Sunday) at the Warner Park in Basseterre, Evin Lewis (100*) and Kyle Mayers (92) put together the highest partnership in Caribbean Premier League (CPL) history. After Andre Fletcher was dismissed for 1, the pair put together 199 for the second wicket to propel the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots to 201/3 at the end of 20 overs.
However, the record partnership did not prove enough as Faf du Plessis’ Saint Lucia Kings got the chase done with 2.4 overs to spare.
Bhanuka Rajapakasa (68* off 35), Tim Seifert (64 off 27) and David Wiese (34* off 20) were the wreckers-in-chief as the Kings, despite being reduced to 24/4 at one point, got home with 16 balls to spare.
Ultimately, it was the slow-down at the end of the first innings that cost the Patriots. Despite being 175/1 at the end of the 17th over, St Kitts only managed 26 off the final three overs. They managed no boundaries in the final eight balls of the innings, with Wiese’s final over costing just three runs.
And so, despite the total looking daunting, Saint Lucia got home comfortably even after a horror start.
The Patriots are now second-to-bottom, with two defeats in three matches.
