Dewald Brevis has lit up the Australian night sky with his incredible hitting in the three T20I series against Australia. The batter, who’s just 22 years old, has already earned a reputation as a big hitter of the ball, and he continued to do the same in the third T20I after scoring a 56-ball 125 in the second game, which South Africa won by 53 runs.
In the third and deciding game of the series, the 22-year-old once again showed why he deserved the moniker of ‘Baby AB’ as he smacked 53 off just 26 deliveries. He scored as many as six sixes in his innings that came at a strike rate of 203.84, and three of those sixes came in a row in the 10th over, bowled by Aaron Hardie.
Brevis was on strike on the third delivery of the over after taking a two on the second, and Hardie, who bowls a stump line more often than not, bowled it slow on the same line and pitched it on a good length. Brevis just kept his head stable and down, and with his high backlift, he just swivelled and smashed the ball with such power that it landed on the roof in Cairns. The fact that he didn’t even care to look where the ball went showed his confidence in the stroke he played.
The next six on the fourth ball of the over was even bigger, as he received it full and slow in the slot, and just launched it over the stadium fence. It was an absolutely huge six, and even this time, he didn’t look up. He did the same on the fifth ball as well, which was bowled cross seam outside off, and deposited it over long off.
He even smashed the last ball of the over for a six over deep point, although it wasn’t a no-look shot. It still brought up his fifty in just 22 deliveries as he collected 27 runs off the over (the over also had a wide).
This allowed South Africa to post a competitive total of 172/7 in the series decider. If South Africa win this, Player of the Series would be an obvious choice of reward for such splendid batting by Brevis.
