Washington Freedom (WF) entered the clash against Texas Super Kings (TSK) today, in Florida, with six consecutive wins, but their unbeaten run came to an end in a rain-curtailed encounter which they lost by 43 runs.
On the night, Washington were downed single-handedly by Donovan Ferreira, who produced an extraordinary cameo, hammering an unbeaten 37 off just 9 balls. TSK retired out Daryl Mitchell (6 off 5 balls) to bring in Ferreira, and the South African batter did not disappoint one bit.
He smashed 28 runs off the final over bowled by Mitchell Owen, and one monster six in that over left Ferreira’s teammates shell-shocked, which went 109 metres, the longest thus far in this year's MLC.
Owen started the final over with a length ball right in the slot, and Ferreira absolutely latched on to it, hitting probably one of the cleanest, sweetest-sounding sixes in history. The connection was so good that the ball went a million miles.
Even better than the six itself was the reaction of Ferreira’s teammates. They were absolutely stunned, with Akeal Hosein having his mouth wide open in disbelief over the hit.
Ferreira’s cameo helped TSK post 87/2. In response, WF could only 44/4 as they lost by 43 runs.
