Sri Lanka were 6/3 after opting to bat first on day one of the first Test against England at Manchester before fifties from skipper Dhananjaya de Silva and debutant Milan Rathnayake propelled them to a respectable total of 236.
Chris Woakes and Gus Atkinson shared the first three wickets before Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal put on 34 runs for the fourth wicket. Just when things were starting to get better, Mark Wood broke the stand by dismissing Mendis.
The visitors kept losing wickets and were soon reduced to 113/7. However, that’s when de Silva and Rathnayake joined hands and put on 63 runs. The skipper got out after scoring 74 off 84, but Rathnayake carried on and crafted 72 off 135.
Sri Lanka were eventually bundled out for 236 in 74 overs, with Woakes and Shoaib Bashir claiming three wickets each. In reply, England batted four overs and hit 22 runs without losing a wicket. They still trail by 214 runs.
