Kamindu Mendis continued his stupendous start to Test cricket by posting his sixth 50-plus score in eight innings, but it ultimately did not count for much as England ended Day 2 of the Lord’s Test 256 runs ahead of their opponents, with nine wickets in hand.
After being pinned with the ball by a Gus Atkinson ton, Sri Lanka were reeling at 87/6 at one point. It was then that Mendis showed some real fight, smashing 74 off just 120 balls, hammering eight fours and three sixes. However, the lack of support from the other end meant that, despite Mendis’ best efforts, all Sri Lanka could post was 196, which rewarded England with a 231-run first-innings lead.
In the third innings, Lahiru Kumara managed to dismiss Dan Lawrence just before stumps, but England still ended the day 256 runs ahead (25/1), edging closer to a series win.
