Resuming Day 2 on 158/4, even the most optimistic Pakistan fan would not have expected their side to bat well enough to declare in the first innings. But a mammoth 240-run stand from centurions Saud Shakeel (141) and Mohammad Rizwan (171*) helped Pakistan recover from 16/3 as the hosts eventually posted 448/6 before declaring late on Day 2.
It was a day filled with agony for visitors Bangladesh, who simply were unable to get through the defences of Shakeel and Rizwan. The surface's lack of help, which flattened out on the second day after proving to be pacer-friendly on the first, did not help their cause either.
Shakeel resumed Day 2 on 57* while Rizwan on 24*. But it was the wicketkeeper-batter that got to the three-figure mark first, getting there in 143 balls. Rizwan eventually finished with the third-highest individual score by a Pakistan batter in Tests and the highest in 44 years.
Shakeel, meanwhile, notched up his third Test ton though he bided his time, getting there in 195 balls.
With rain taking away time on Day 1, Pakistan declared in the third session, thereby giving the Bangladesh batters a tricky hour to negotiate.
However, Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan exited the day unscathed, batting out 12 overs without losing a wicket.
