There’s one name on Indian fans’ lips right now, and that is Akash Deep. The 28-year-old has bowled quite a spell in the fag end of day four in the second Test, on July 5 (Saturday) with two crucial wickets when the team needed.
After setting England a target of 608, India needed their pacers to strike early, and so they did. Akash Deep, who took the new ball, struck early for the Men in Blue, removing the dangerous-looking Ben Duckett for 25.
But with Joe Root well set and a partnership with Ollie Pope blossoming, Indian skipper Shubman Gill looked towards the 28-year-old to break the partnership. Like he has done in the entire Test, Akash Deep struck with a peach of a delivery, as Root looked in total ‘disbelief’.
The right-arm speedster went a little wider than usual, delivering the ball into the right-hander before moving it just away from the edge, hitting the top of off stump. Root couldn’t account for the late movement, as he looked at all dead ends with the ball rattling the stumps.
It continued a crazy run in the clash for Akash, who mimicked Cristiano Ronaldo, with a ‘Calma, I’m here’ celebration.
