It’s been a long, long time coming, but Jofra Archer finally made his comeback to red-ball cricket today with Sussex against Durham Chester-le-Street. After the clash against Kent in May 2021, Archer remarkably went four more years without making a single appearance in first-class cricket.
However, that wait ended today as the fiery speedster finally donned the whites again.
And Archer made an instant impact, as he registered figures of 10-5-19-1 in his first 10 overs.
The wicket he took on the day was a big scalp, that of Durham opener Emilio Gay. Archer came from ‘round the wicket and rapped the left-hander right in front of the stumps. He was elated as the umpire ruled the batter out, giving the 30-year-old his first red-ball wicket in four years.
It will be interesting to see if Archer shows enough to convince the English management to pick him for the second Test against India, which starts on July 2nd at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
So far in the ongoing first Test at Headingley, England’s bowling has looked toothless, with India racking up massive totals in both the first and second innings of the game.
Archer’s last Test came against India in Ahmedabad in 2021.
