Chasing 205 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi Capitals (DC) lost both Karun Nair and Abishek Porel inside the powerplay but with two experienced campaigners — KL Rahul and Faf du Plessis — still in the middle, DC looked pretty poised to get to the target at 60/2 after 6.2 overs.
However, things turned upside down for DC in a matter of seconds, as their trump card, KL Rahul, suffered an unfortunate run out.
A stray delivery down leg-side from Anukul Roy was flicked to short fine-leg from du Plessis, who immediately took off for a single. However, both batters were not initially convinced there was a run and so there was a bit of hesitation right in the middle.
Eventually, both batters committed to the run but the second’s delay proved fatal as Rahul succumbed to a direct hit from Sunil Narine. Replays showed that Rahul was short of the crease by centimeters.
It was a very, very rare run out for Rahul — only his fourth ever in the IPL, and his first since the 2022 season. 1087 days to be precise. Incidentally, the previous run out also came against KKR, where Shreyas Iyer ran him out.
