It was third time lucky for the Dindigul Dragons as they finally lifted their maiden Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) title after defeating the defending champions Lyca Kovai Kings in the final held on August 4 (Sunday) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Earlier the Dragons had made it to the final of the competition in consecutive editions - 2018 and 2019.
Winning the toss and opting to bowl first, the Dragons, despite the Kings being 49/1 in the last over of the powerplay, managed to drag things back and restrict the defending champions to 129/7. Sandeep Warrier, Varun Chakaravrthy and P Vignesh took two wickets each for the Dragons, while Ram Aravindh (27) top-scored for the Kings.
It should have been an easy chase but the Dragons lost two quick wickets - Shivam Singh and Vimal Khumar. Skipper Ravichandran Ashwin (52) and experienced campaigner Baba Indrajith then got together and put up a run-a-ball 65 for the third wicket.
Though Indrajith got out, Ashwin carried on shouldering the responsibility to take his team home. The 37-year-old faltered only at the last mile with the score at 121. Sarath Kumar and Boopathi Kumar did the rest as the Dragons chased the target in 18.2 overs to win the TNPL 2024.
