Varun Chakaravarthy became the oldest Indian to take a wicket on his ODI debut when he removed England opener Phil Salt during the second ODI of the three-match series between India and England at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on February 9 (Sunday).
Salt, who was batting at 26 off 28 balls, tried to play a sweep shot, but got a leading edge, which was caught by Ravindra Jadeja at mid-on. This was also the first wicket for India in the game.
Before Chakaravarthy, who took the wicket at the age of 33 years and 164 days, another spinner, Dilip Doshi, took a wicket on his ODI debut at the age of 32 years and 350 days. Krishnappa Gowtham is the third-oldest Indian to take a wicket on ODI debut.
Pakistan's Zulfiqar Babar holds the record among all the oldest debutants to pick a wicket in ODIs. The left-arm spinner picked the wicket at the age of 35 years and 301 days against Australia in Sharjah in 2014.
