Playing his 300th One-Day International (ODI), Virat Kohli would have hoped to make an impact against New Zealand in the final group stage match of the ICC Champion Trophy 2025 in Dubai on March 2 (Sunday). However, his innings was cut short as Glenn Phillips took a stunning catch at short point.
Kohli played a well-timed cut short off Matt Henry, but Phillips dove to his right, stuck his right hand out, and it stuck, leaving Kohli stunned. The Indian batter was dismissed for 11 off 14.
This is not the first time Phillips has pulled off a stunner like this in the tournament. In the opening match of the tournament against Pakistan, he took a similar catch, only this time diving one-handed to his left, and grabbing the catch to dismiss Mohammad Rizwan.
When asked about his ability to pull off such screamers, Phillips, ahead of the India clash, said, “I wish I could say that I've got a special little glue tag that I use, but unfortunately, that's not the case. If anything, my palms are more sweaty than anything else."
Kohli's wicket has put India in a spot of bother as they have lost three wickets inside seven overs.
This match is of little consequence as both India and New Zealand have qualified for the semi-final of the tournament. However, the winner of this match will top Group A and take on Australia in the semis. The losing side will play South Africa.
