WATCH: WORST Decision Of The Year? Michael Atherton’s Son BAFFLED By Shocking Call
Baffled by the call, the batter expressed his disappointment by pointing to his gloves
England have plenty of young all-rounders coming through the ranks in domestic cricket, and one such promising all-rounder is 23-year-old Joshua de Caires, who is incidentally the son of the legendary Michael Atherton.
An opening batter who bowls off-spin, de Caires plies his trade for Middlesex, and he began the domestic One Day Cup with a fine 71 against Somerset on August 6th. However, the 23-year-old would likely have gone on to score a ton if not for a dubious umpiring call.
Facing Jack Leach in the 29th over, the right-hander tried to reverse-sweep the left-arm spinner in an attempt to unsettle him. The ball clearly hit de Caires on the glove, but the Somerset players still went up in unison.
To de Caires and Middlesex’s shock, the on-field umpire raised his finger and ruled the batter out. Baffled by the call, the batter expressed his disappointment by pointing to his gloves, but no DRS meant that he had to make his way back to the dressing room.
It proved decisive eventually as Somerset first restricted Middlesex to 289, and then won by six wickets.
