We fell short with the bat on day four: Bumrah

India took a lead of 132 in the first innings but were bundled out for 245 in the second essay

India's stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah said their batting in the third innings gave England an opening to make a comeback in the rescheduled fifth and final Test at Edgbaston.

The visitors took a lead of 132 in the first innings but were bundled out for 245 on day four. Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow then smashed centuries in the fourth innings and helped England chase down a record target of 378.

"This is the beauty of Test cricket, isn't it? Even if you have three good days, you have to keep coming in and keeping up the good performances. I think yesterday (Monday), we fell short with the bat, and we had to come back with the ball. That is the phase where we let the opposition in, and the momentum kept shifting away from us.

"Ifs and buts can always be there. We could have been a little straighter in our bowling lines and use the variable bounce," said Bumrah at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Bumrah was named India's Man of the Series, having claimed 23 wickets in nine innings at an average of 22.47 and a strike rate of 48.7. The series ended with a scoreline 2-2 but India could have emerged victorious if rain wouldn't have played a spoilsport in the opening Test.

"If you go back, if there was no rain in the first match, we could have won the series. But England played really well. We have drawn the series and both teams played very good cricket and it was a fair result."

In the first innings, India were reduced to 98/5 before Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja smashed hundreds and helped their team post a solid total of 416. The two put on 222 runs for the sixth wicket and Bumrah had nothing but praise for the two left-handers.

"He takes his chances. He and Jaddu really got us back into the game because we were really struggling at that time. At 98 for 5 England were on top. They counter-attacked and got us into the game, and we were ahead in the game.

"That's the beauty of Test cricket, we've got different characters in our team. Pant takes his chances, backs his game, and goes to the hilt. So, very happy for him, he had a very good match."

Talking about leading India for the first time, Bumrah said: "The captaincy future is not what I decide. It was a good challenge. I always like responsibility. That's the way I've always played cricket. It was a new challenge; a lot of great learnings came my way, and I was a lot more involved in the game. Very happy, it was an honour to lead the team. It was a great experience."
