We were not good enough to win the game: Pant

DC failed to make it to the playoffs following a five-wicket loss to Mumbai Indians on Saturday

Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant felt that his team has to take the disappointment of not making it to the IPL 2022 playoffs on the chin following their five-wicket loss to Mumbai Indians.

Defending 160 on a tricky batting surface at the Wankhede, DC were undone by a whirlwind 34 off 11 balls from Tim David which confirmed Royal Challengers Bangalore's qualification in the fourth place.

Pant felt that the team lacked in execution department throughout the tournament.

"I think it's not about the pressure but at the same time we could have done better execution, better planning. That's the only thing and we have been missing that a lot throughout the tournament," Pant admitted in the post-match presentation.

"So we have to learn from our mistakes next season and come back as a strong team again next year," he added.

Batting first, DC lost their top four with 50 runs on the board as Pant (39 off 33) and Rovman Powell (43 off 34) steadied the innings before Axar Patel (19 not out off 10) contributed valuable runs at the end.

Pant felt that the dew in the latter stages of the second innings did not help his bowlers who managed to narrow down MI's chase to 68 runs from 36 balls.

"I think we were 5-7 runs short. We were not short much. We actually really bowled well throughout the tournament but dew came in on the latter half of today's match and we missed our execution. We didn't bowl to our planning. It's hard but at the same time we have to take it on our chin and learn from it," Pant said.

Pant revealed that his conversations with head coach Ricky Ponting were not to try something out of the box.

"The only thing we were discussing is to tell bowlers to keep it simple and not try too many things because in these crunch games, we don't have to create something different. We just have to keep doing the things that are working for us and keep believing that," he said.
