Netherlands skipper Scott Edwards admitted that his side ‘weren’t up to the mark’ on the day against Bangladesh as the Dutch slipped to a costly defeat at the hands of the Tigers to significantly hurt their Super 8s qualification chances.
Netherlands entered the clash against Bangladesh on June 13 (Thursday) with their fate in their own hands but that is no longer the case after their 25-run defeat. After conceding 159 with the ball bowling first, a fatal death overs collapse (111/3 to 134/8) saw Edwards’ side fall well short of the target.
“Credit to Bangladesh. I thought they played really well. We just weren't up to it in all three departments. They got wickets in hand. We didn't execute well, which was a shame,” Edwards said after the Bangladesh loss.
The Dutch skipper hinted that his side lost the ball in the first innings by conceding one too many runs.
“It was probably 10-15 runs more than we would've liked,” Edwards said, speaking of the 159 Bangladesh posted batting first.
One Dutch player, however, had a fine day out, and that was young Aryan Dutt. On his T20WC debut, the 21-year-old off-spinner took the new ball and sizzled, registering figures of 4-0-17-2. He set the tone with the ball for Netherlands, taking two wickets in his first two overs to rattle the Tigers up front.
“He's been sensational for us for a few years now,” Edwards said of Dutt.
“In general, he's always been one of our best T20 bowlers. Just felt these conditions would suit him.”
To qualify for the Super 8s, Netherlands will have to hammer Sri Lanka and hope that Bangladesh suffer a defeat against Nepal. They also will have to hope that Nepal don’t win both their remaining matches.
