West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced that she intends to build a cricket stadium in Darjeeling in Richa Ghosh's honour. Wicketkeeper-batter Richa played a pivotal role in India's triumph in the Women's World Cup, scoring 235 runs at 39.16 and a strike rate of 133.52, including a vital 34 off 24 in the final against South Africa in Navi Mumbai on November 2.
Recognising her contribution, she was appointed the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in West Bengal, with the CM personally handing over the appointment letter during a felicitation ceremony at the Eden Gardens on November 8 (Saturday).
"Richa became the world champion at the age of only 22. Our leaders have organised a big welcome for her in her hometown. The Cricket Association of Bengal had invited me for their felicitation event, and on behalf of the West Bengal government, we also honoured her. But further, I want to build a stadium, a cricket stadium here. There are about 27 acres of land. I will tell the mayor to plan a cricket stadium. And this cricket stadium should be made Richa Cricket Stadium so that people will remember her performance in the future too. Many will be inspired by it," the Bengal CM said.
This was India's first-ever Women's World Cup title. They had made it to the final twice before this - in 2005 and 2017 - but fell short on both occasions.
