In what’s a potential watershed moment for cricket in the Caribbean, Cricket West Indies (CWI) have awarded multi-year contracts for select individuals for the first time in history.
The landmark move comes on the back of a new four-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in January 2024 between CWI and the West Indies Players Association (WIPA).
Across Men and Women, a total of nine players have been awarded multi-year international contracts. Among the nine are Shai Hope, Hayley Matthews, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph and Stefanie Taylor.
21 other players—across Men and Women—have been awarded single-year contracts. Roston Chase, Kavem Hodge, and Ashmini Munisar are the three new additions who did not have a central contract in the previous year.
A notable exclusion is Kemar Roach, but CWI confirmed that the veteran pacer is ‘in discussions regarding a new dual playing and mentorship/coaching role’ as he begins to ponder retirement and begin the next chapter of his cricketing career.
For Women, CWI have also brought in an updated performance assessment structure, which is now aligned to those used for International and Regional Men.
“This also comes with increased contract levels of pay in keeping with the commitment to a move to parity in match fees and prize money across Men’s and Women’s professional cricket by October 2027,” the board confirmed in the release.
Speaking of the historical announcement, CWI Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe said, “CWI has committed to maintaining open and honest dialogue with players and being practical about the realities of the modern game. The players have responded in kind and the acceptance of multi-year contracts is an indication of clarity, confidence, and commitment on both sides. I’d like to congratulate the entire contracted cohort on their performances in the last assessment period and I look forward to them building on those in next one."
