West Indies edge past Bangladesh to keep semi-final hopes alive

The defending champions got over the line by a narrow three-run margin

West Indies hold on to a close three-run win against Bangladesh to stay in the hunt for a place in the semi-final in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021.  Bangladesh needed 13 off the final over but fell just short on 139 for 5 in Sharjah with Andre Russell bowling the crucial over.

Asked to set a target for the third consecutive time in the tournament, West Indies posted 142 for 7 with Nicholas Pooran's 40 off 22 balls being the highlight of their innings. The wicketkeeper-batter hit four sixes and one four playing a huge part in his side scoring 58 runs in the final five overs, which gave the defending champions some momentum going into the break.

Roston Chase on his T20I debut anchored the innings with a 46-ball 39. Shoriful Islam, who dismissed Pooran and Chase off consecutive deliveries in the penultimate over of the innings was the pick of the Bangladesh bowlers finishing with figures of 2 for 20. Mustafizur Rahman (2 for 43) and Mahedi Hasan (2 for 27) were among the wickets as well.

Chase and Pooran put on 57 for the fourth wicket off just 33 deliveries to help West Indies back in the game.

Chasing 143, Bangladesh lost their openers - Mohammad Naim and Shakib Al Hasan - inside the powerplay. But Liton Das, who came in at three held one end up, but finally got some support from skipper Mahmudullah (31*) along with whom he put on 40 for the sixth wicket to give Bangladesh the edge.

With 50 need off the last six overs with six wickets in hand, skipper Mahmudullah and Das looked to be in control, converting ones into twos while also hitting boundaries regularly. Dwayne Bravo (1 for 36) produced a conducive 17th over, giving away just three runs. In the first ball of the penultimate over, he was hit for a six by Mahmudullah but the veteran all-rounder proved his mettle by getting rid of danger-man Das in his final ball.

However, with 13 needed off the last over, Mahmudullah failed to find the fence despite getting a life off the fourth ball when he was dropped by substitute fielder Andre Fletcher in the deep. Russell stuck to his guns and bowled yorker after yorker to give his side a chance of progressing in the competition.

With this loss, Bangladesh are virtually out of the competition. They will have to beat South Africa and Australia and hope that certain results go their way.  It will not be smooth sailing for the West Indies either. They will have to beat both Sri Lanka and Australia to have any chance of making it to the next round.

Brief scores:

West Indies 142 for 7 in 20 overs (Nicholas Pooran 40, Roston Chase 39; Shoriful Islam 2 for 20) beat Bangladesh 139 for 5 in 20 overs (Liton Das 44, Mahmudullah 31*; Jason Holder 1 for 22) by 3 runs

Player of the match: Nicholas Pooran
