On the final day of the Women's ODI Qualifiers in Lahore, the West Indies missed out on making it to the Women's World Cup 2025 by the barest of margins. The West Indies did everything in their control, and chased down 167 in just 10.5 overs against Thailand, but it was not enough.
This is the earliest a team has reached its target in WODIs, while chasing a target in excess of 150. Moreover, West Indies skipper Hayley Matthews got to her fifty of just 21 deliveries - the second-fastest to get to the landmark in WODI history, after Deandra Dottin (20 balls).
Earlier today, Pakistan maintained their unbeaten run in the Qualifiers, beating Bangladesh by seven wickets. While Pakistan had already qualified, a win for Bangladesh would have seen them progress, making the West Indies vs Thailand clash redundant.
Bangladesh and West Indies finished with six points apiece, but the former ended with a net run-rate of 0.639. West Indies, on the other hand, finished with a net run-rate of 0.626. A difference of just 0.013! As a result, Bangladesh will play in the mega event later this year at the West Indies' expense.
West Indies first played in the World Cup in 1993, and this is just the second time they have missed out on qualification. They also failed to qualify for the World Cup in 2000. The Women's ODI World Cup will be played in India later this year, most likely in September-October.
