West Indies pull off another thrilling heist, beat England by seven runs

Anisa Mohammed claimed two wickets in the 48th over as West Indies pulled off a late victory yet again

West Indies defended another low total following their opening day win over New Zealand as they beat defending champions England by seven runs in the 2022 Women's World Cup at Dunedin.

After winning the toss and electing bat, West Indies were anchored by Shemaine Campbell's 66 off 80 balls while opener Hayley Matthews continued her good form in the tournament with 45 off 58 balls. Chedean Nation made another crucial contribution with 49 not out off 74 balls as she added 123 with Campbell for the fifth wicket.

Left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone was responsible for Windies' early collapse with 3-20 after Matthews and Deandra Dottin put up an opening partnership of 81. She foxed Matthews who top edged it to Anya Shrubsole at third man and then got Kycia Knight to hit it straight to short cover.

She then cramped Stafanie Taylor for a first-ball duck as the Windies skipper edged a catch to keeper Amy Jones.

Windies carried on with a low run rate and managed to put on 225/6 in 50 overs.

Chasing a modest total, England lost Lauren Winfield-Hill early when Dottin pulled off stunner at point off Shamilia Connell. Matthews struck twice to remove Heather Knight and Nat Sciver for single-digit scores.

England were reduced to 94/5 when Aaliyah Alleyne dismissed keeper batter Jones for a single run while Anisa Mohammed trapped Tammy Beaumont (46) leg before. Dani Wyatt (33) and Sophia Dunkley (38) stitched a 60-run partnership but fell in quick succession with Chinelle Henry claiming two difficult catches.

Kate Cross (27) and Ecclestone (33 not out) put on a rescue act with 61-run partnership as they brought down the equation to 14 from 24 balls. Matthews narrowly missed Ecclestone's catch as England needed just nine off 18 balls.

However, Mohammed ran out non-striker Cross as she got her finger tips to the ball and then castled last batter Anya Shrubsole for a duck to cap off a stunning victory for the Windies who registered back-to-back wins.
