Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni has been great with the Decision Review System (DRS) in the past, so good that the fans have their own backronym for DRS - Dhoni Review System.
The 43-year-old wicketkeeper, however, missed a review against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match 38 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. If he had done that, CSK would have gotten a wicket in the first over.
It was the fifth delivery of the first over, and MI opener Ryan Rickelton had already smashed two fours by then. CSK’s left-arm seamer Khaleel Ahmed then got the fifth delivery to come back in from outside off and pinned Rickelton on his front pad.
The ball fell just short of Vijay Shankar at first slip, and everyone thought there was an inside edge. Khaleel appealed half-heartedly but pulled out straightaway, thinking there was some edge. There was no appeal from any other player, even from Dhoni behind the stumps.
There was no discussion for the review either. It looked close to naked eyes, but the game went on. However, the replays showed there was no edge and the ball would have gone on to hit the leg stump. That’s right, it was THREE REDS.
That gave Rickelton an early reprieve as MI got off to a flying start in the 177-run chase.
