With India defeating New Zealand by 44 runs in the final group game of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai on March 2 (Sunday), it’s confirmed that the Men in Blue will take on Australia in their semi-final of the 50-over event. The two teams will take on each other in Dubai on March 4 (Tuesday), while New Zealand will play South Africa in Lahore on March 5 (Wednesday).
Now that it’s confirmed that India will take on Australia in the first semi-final, let’s look back at how they have fared against the most successful team in the history of all ICC events. Unsurprisingly, India don’t have a great record against Australia in ICC knockout encounters.
ODI World Cup 2011 quarter-final: India won by five wickets
ODI World Cup 2015 semi-final: Australia won by 95 runs
ODI World Cup 2023 final: Australia won by six wickets
WTC 2023 final: Australia won by 209 runs
The last time India defeated Australia in the knockout stage of an ICC event was in the quarter-finals of the 2011 World Cup. In 2023, India lost two finals against Australia, including a defeat in the home World Cup final in Ahmedabad - India’s only loss in their last 23 ICC event matches.
In those last two games, Travis Head took the game away from India, and the left-handed opener is coming into this semi-final in great form. In two innings, Head has smashed 65 runs at an average of 65 and a stunning strike rate of 144.44.
