The fifth Test between India and England looked like it would end on Day 4 for all money, but there was a twist in the tale right at the end. First, England lost three quick wickets and came under serious pressure out of nowhere, and then, with 35 runs required, rain made its way into The Oval to halt proceedings. As it turned out, no more play was possible on the day.
So as a result, we’ll be seeing this Test too going into the fifth and final day. It means that remarkably, all five Tests of this series would have ended on the final day, an incredibly rare occurrence for a five-Test series.
The last time a five-Test series saw all five games going to Day 5 was the 2017/18 Ashes in Australia. That’s right, that was a one-sided series which saw Australia win 4-0, but still England managed to stretch every game into the final day.
The Boxing Day Test at the MCG was a draw, but despite heavily losing every other game, the Three Lions managed to stretch them into the fifth day.
In fact, this is only the fourth time this century a five-Test series has seen all five games go to five days. The other three instances are Ashes 2017/18, England tour of South Africa 2004/05 and South Africa tour of West Indies 2001.
